Rhonda Roth, Leo's frankly lesbian sister, is portrayed by actress Lisa Edelstein. We recently invited Lisa, who is very active both online and with the ABC Relativity page, to contribute to our Fan Newsletter. She graciously consented, so we sent her some questions we thought fans of Lisa's and Relativity might want answered. Her answers are funny and down- to-earth and we are thrilled to have her on board.Q. How did you come to be cast in the show?
How I got cast in the show...
Well, the usual way, I auditioned. Originally I auditioned for the part of Karen but didn't get it. Then I came in to read for Rhonda in front of Mark (director) and Jason (writer). Rhonda didn't have too many lines in the pilot so I read Rhonda's and Silvie's lines. I had to come back that afternoon and read for Mark, Jason and Ed (Zwick). I was nervous! The office is on the third floor of the building. I took the stairs and ended up in a funny race up the stairs with some man I'd never met. I thought to myself "wouldn't it be funny if that was Ed Zwick?" And as it turned out, it was! Finally, I had to go to the network and do it one more time. I was there along with Poppy, Jane, Richard and Mary Ellen. They didn't even bring any actors to read against us. Going to network is usually pretty terrifying because you've already signed your contracts, you know exactly what's at stake and it's usually very tense. But this time, it was a great experience for all of us. Including the fact that we all got the jobs.Q. What is the best thing that has come out of your association with the show?
Well, for the last 5 years I've mostly been doing sitcoms. This was my first real opportunity to show that I can do something else. For that I felt really fortunate. Also, working with such a quality bunch of people has been an amazing experience. The writing is so good which makes our jobs so much more fulfilling.Q. What is the worst thing?
In an upcoming episode I wear really bad pants. It's terribly embarrassing. Gotta hate that, eh? See if you can figure out which pair of pants I hate.Q. You are so slim and trim..what is your secret?
LOL! Well, thank you! But when you see me in the bad pants you might think differently!!! ;-) Actually, I run about 4 miles every other day and do push ups, sit ups and back strengthening exercises. I had a spinal fusion done in my neck about two years ago and could barely walk after that. Now I am in the best shape in my life. I'm also a nightmare eater for anyone that wants me over for dinner. I'm a vegetarian for 13 years, no dairy for 9 years, no sugar, no caffeine and no white flour. Pretty hellish, eh?Q. What do you do in your spare time between takes on the set?
I sometimes read or talk on the phone or harass somebody in the crew . Some people knit and stuff. Devon and Karen and I think Poppy are learning to play the guitar. Devon's trailer is next to mine and he has his guitar connected to an amp so it can get pretty funny.Q. Which of you on set is the best prepared and knows their lines? Who always flubs?
I'm not sure! It varies from day to day and episode to episode... Sometimes it's pretty hard to keep Adam from straying too far from the script but he's so damn funny who'd want to keep him on a verbal leash? They usually let him just go off and we ALWAYS get a gem out of it.We had a sneaky suspicion that Adam was enliving Doug in his own way...and we love it. Thanks, Lisa, for answering our questions and we will look for those pants!http://www.reocities.com/TelevisionCity/1404/nwslttr8.html
